I think you could do a whole academic study on Sailor Moon as a character vs Sailor Moon as a cultural icon.
And I mean, not even getting into Sailor Moon-the-Icon over the decades around the world, especially Japan, which is way, way bigger and more complicated than what had in mind when I made this post. I’m just thinking of Sailor Moon-the-Icon as she’s appeared in the past few years as the face of Millennial nostalgia.
There’s the canon Sailor Moon. Fourteen years old, crybaby, reluctant hero, loves to eat and sleep, loves her friends, loves everyone unconditionally.
But there’s also been this surge in 90s nostalgia, combined with a rise in Millennial Aesthetic, resulting in a Sailor Moon who is somehow very detached from her canon self, and yet still immediately recognizable. The tattooed, pierced, witchcraft-wielding, motorcycle-riding, sexy femme ass kicking Sailor Moon. We’ve all seen her all over, not even just on Tumblr. There’s tons of artists who have done their own variations. Lots of cosplay with these edgy, grown up twists. There are multiple burlesque troupes now doing Sailor Moon-themed numbers.
And yet I’ve never seen one complaint from the fandom about how completely un-Usagi-like this version of Sailor Moon is, because I think we all recognize that this isn’t an attempt to change our beloved character. It’s representing the icon that people have grown up with. In a way, it’s showing how the image of Sailor Moon has grown up in people’s minds, beyond the character herself. People who felt represented by her when they were young are reimagining her as what she represents to them now. And it’s just neat how much that is solidly in the spirit of Sailor Moon.

Sailor Moon did not enter my life so much as consume it. I was eight, and in the space of a few weeks I learned all the attack names, bought the first two issues of the manga, went through three different understandings of how to pronounce “Takeuchi”, and...
IDK if I’ve mentioned this before, but since there’s talk of how to approach an accurate/nuanced translation of the word “baka” in anime on my dash, I thought I’d share one of my other favorite bits of oft-overlooked translating-Japanese nuance and how it applies to Sailor Moon.
Basically every Sailor Moon fan knows Sailor Moon’s catchphrase, “tuski ni kawatte oshiokyo!” which translates more or less into “In the name of the moon, I’ll punish you!”
The fun part, that I learned a few years back from my half-Japanese friend who has, since high school, lived full time in Japan, is the “oshiokyo” bit.
Oshiokyo does, in a literal sense, mean “I’ll punish you”. It’s a perfectly fine translation. But what it doesn’t get across is that the main people who use the phrase are parents, especially mothers, and it’s primarily used against children.
There’s not a perfect English equivalent, but it carries a similar tone to “someone’s getting a spanking!” or “you’re going into time out!” or “you’re in big trouble, missy!”
Basically, it’s not particularly threatening, and anyone who would think it was would be pretty childish. The fact that Usagi uses it as a legitimate threat is adorable in how much is reveals her age. It’s also badass and kind of condescending in that she’s basically treating the villains as unruly children instead of legitimate threats.
So there you go. Take this information and put new joy into one of the most well-trod parts of the Sailor Moon universe.
IN THE NAME OF THE MOON…. YOU ARE GROUNDED. GO TO YOUR ROOM AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID!
Haha, omg, I never knew this.
Sailor Moon Crystal: Leaked Opening and Transformation ✨
So someone swapped in the Attack on Titan theme on the opening for Sailor Moon Crystal and this was the result.
Holy shit
do most anime openings got like a pacing system going on? cuz when I was in the 10th grade I tried swapping the 2nd Naruto opening with the OP music from at least 6 different animes and every single one of them worked flawlessly
they actually do, they’re very formulaic.

Feminism is about choice, whether it be liking stereotypical girlish things or rejecting them. Sailor Moon is empowering for many because it showed that one was not weak for liking “girly” things, that they need not be mutually exclusive.
Sailor Moon has a regular cast of 5 women, with the addition of 4 more recurring female characters as the story progresses, all with different personalities, motivations, struggles, and flaws. Usagi is the only one with a love interest that shapes the story, but her loving Mamoru never results in her sacrificing her friends (unless you count the live action). There is a canonically gay couple whose relationship is never questioned in universe. In the books, none of the scouts fight over a lover. In the 90’s anime, fighting over a lover doesn’t ruin a friendship. Sailor Moon starts off terrified of going into battle but she still does. Several characters, both good and evil, show the fluidity of gender. Several characters show the fluidity of good and evil. Sailor Moon teaches that it is okay to want love. That it is okay to be single. That one act of kindness can change a person’s life. That one act of cruelty can ruin a person’s life. That it’s okay to rely on other people. That some people can be saved. That some people don’t want to be saved. That someone can like studying, cooking, motorcycles, Gods, boys, girls, art, pop culture or video games and it does not mean they are a lesser person for it.
In short, Sailor Moon is feminist because it reassures it’s audience that anyone can be a guardian of justice so long as you are will to right wrongs and triumph over evil.
Very very true that last bit: Also in itself I don’t see Feminism as something that should “reject” all girly things. On the contrary: it seeks a world where what is feminine and girly is no longer viewed as less but as equal to everything masculine. Sailor Moon saves the world with her sparkly pink power of love, and why shouldn’t she?
Sailor Moon AMV/Trailer- “Requiem for a Dream”
Literally one of the most BEAUTIFUL AMVs I’ve ever seen in my life. I completely broke down into tears when I watched it.
